MILL RIVER EAST Call it an early start or a late finish. Either way, Troy Smallman was back at the controls of a W.P. Griffin Inc. tractor pulling the company's four-row potato harvester through a field in Mill River East. Wet conditions forced the company to leave close to six acres of the field untouched last fall. "We were just in the field checking it over," said Smallman. "The potatoes seemed pretty sound. We had a fairly mild winter with lots of snow and the ground never really froze solid." So, while some members of the Elmsdale company's farm crew were busy planting the 2011 crop, Troy Smallman hooked an available tractor to the digger. He admitted he didn't expect a bumper crop. There was evidence of water damage and frost damage in some areas. I don't think they're all that great of quality, he said afterwards, but we might get a few good ones out of it. The cull rate is expected to be high. "I had an available tractor, so we hooked it onto the digger just, more or less, to say we dug some potatoes in the spring," he chuckled.
