John Griffin was honoured to be named one of Atlantic Canada's Top 50 CEO's for 2013. He accepted the award on behalf of his business partner Peter Griffin and the entire family and staff. Since 1999, Atlantic Business Magazine has dedicated one of its six issues per year to profiling Atlantic Canada's most accomplished business leaders. Our intention is to give a worthy individual the recognition he/she deserves as well as to use their example to inspire other companies and business leaders to achieve similar success.

Sobeys/Griffin museum promotion 'exceeded our wildest dreams'

On Wednesday members of the staff from WP Griffins and Sobeys visited the Canadian Potato Museum in O'Leary to present a cheque for $49,500. Griffins and Sobeys collectively contributed 25 cents to the museum from every specially marked Heritage Netted Gems bags of WP Griffin potatoes Sobeys sold in its Atlantic Canada stores during the month of February. They sold 198,000 bags during the month. Griffin said his workers were shocked to get a mid-month order for 140,000 additional bags to satisfy a final week sales campaign. The PEI Potato Board, FreshMedia, PEI Bag Co., Rodd Mill River resort and Gold PEI also contributed with the special fundraising initiative.

ELMSDALE - A Prince County business has won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. W.P. Griffin Inc. was presented the award in Halifax on Oct. 18 in the Business to Consumer Products and Services Category. The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year recognizes the spirit and contribution of entrepreneurs here and around the world. Award winners are chosen based on a number of factors, including their vision, leadership, financial performance and social responsibility. Founded in 1947, W.P. Griffin of Elmsdale is a family-owned agri-business that produces, packages and markets healthy, easy-to-prepare meal choices. The company, now run by John and Peter Griffin, was started by their father Wilfred. "We annually produce 3,500 acres of potatoes, grains, soybeans, hay and rye grass," the brothers said in a prepared statement. "Potatoes are our passion we cultivating many different potato varieties and types including Russets, reds, white and yellow fleshed potatoes."

Sobeys completes World's Largest Potato Display

Sobeys has completed construction of their world record-setting display, featuring a final total of 92,500 pounds of Prince Edward Island potatoes, on Wednesday, October 3rd at their retail location on University Avenue in Charlottetown. This sets a new, unofficial world record for the size of a potato display, eclipsing a previous record of 80,000 lbs previously set in the United States. The display consists of 10 pound paper bags of PEI potatoes supplied by Prince Edward Island potato growers, including WP Griffin Inc. in Elmsdale and Jewell's of PEI Inc. in York. This record-setting display also kicks off a five day sale on potatoes at this location, ahead of the Thanksgiving long weekend. To celebrate, Sobeys hosted a barbeque on Wednesday, October 3rd from 4 to 6 pm and on Thursday, October 4th from 11 am to 2 pm. Proceeds from the barbeque went to the Canadian Potato Museum in O'Leary, PEI. As well, WP Griffin Inc. provided baked potatoes from their portable potato baking machine. Also on hand was Tate, the PEI Potatoes mascot and Bud the Spud, the mascot for WP Griffin Inc.
